Founded under the name Massalía around 600 BC, by Greeks coming from Phocaea (now Foça in Turkey), Marseille is the oldest city in France. Since its foundation, Massalia/Marseille became an important commercial and passenger port. The opening of Marseille on the Mediterranean sea has made it a cosmopolitan city and a crossroads for cultural and economic exchanges with Southern Europe, the Near East, North Africa and Asia. Marseille is named the “Gate of the Orient”.
