Founded under the name Massalía around 600 BC, by Greeks coming from Phocaea (now Foça in Turkey), Marseille is the oldest city in France. Since its foundation, Massalia/Marseille became an important commercial and passenger port. The opening of Marseille on the Mediterranean sea has made it a cosmopolitan city and a crossroads for cultural and economic exchanges with Southern Europe, the Near East, North Africa and Asia. Marseille is named the “Gate of the Orient”.

Marseille is accessible by plane and train (TGV) from the main cities in France. Middle (Brussels, Muncher, Francfort, Roma …) and long haul flights (Canada, Middle East, Indian Ocean, Africa …) serve also Marseille.
